Panfish & Perch: The Family Program

No boat, no problem. The easiest place in Ontario to get a kid hooked.

Dock Fishing That Just Works

Not every trip needs a 10-pound target. Yellow perch, rock bass, bluegill, and pumpkinseed swarm the bay's docks, harbours, and weedy shorelines.

A simple worm under a float, cast from a public dock in Picton, Deseronto, or Belleville, catches fish within minutes on most summer days. No boat needed.

Jumbo Perch: A Trophy Hunt of Its Own

Quinte's jumbo perch are a legitimate trophy hunt of their own. The bay grows thick, golden perch that locals chase hard, especially through the ice in the outer bays. Small jigs tipped with minnows do the damage.

Crappie Too

Black crappie round out the panfish list. Look for them around marina docks and brush in spring, and over deeper basins in the cold months.

Keep It Simple for Kids

Light spinning rods, small hooks, worms from a local bait shop, and a spot with steady action. The species doesn't matter. The bent rod does.
